Nobel Peace Prize
Boulder, Colo. – October 15, 2007 – Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to the IPCC: Mr. Joel Smith, an IPCC Lead Author and Vice President of Stratus Consulting, a Key Participant
The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore have been awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norweigan Nobel Committee, in a press release dated October 12, 2007, described the award as being “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.”
The IPCC is the leading body for the assessment of climate change, established by the United Nations Environmental Programme and the World Meteorological Organization, to provide the world with a neutral view of the present state of understanding of climate change. The IPCC does not conduct research on its own. Its core activity is to review and assess the most recent scientific, technical, and socioeconomic information relevant to the understanding of climate change. The IPCC provides at regular intervals comprehensive, rigorously documented Assessment Reports that summarize the current knowledge and future projections of climate change. IPCC reports are written by teams of authors, nominated by governments and international organizations. The authors come from universities, research centers, and business and environmental associations from all over the world. More than 800 contributing authors and more than 450 lead authors were involved in the writing of the Fourth Assessment Report.
Mr. Joel Smith, a vice president of Stratus Consulting, has been working with the IPCC since 1998. Mr. Smith was the:
- Coordinating Lead Author for the synthesis chapter on climate change impacts for the Third Assessment Report,
- Lead Author for the Fourth Assessment Report, and
- Lead Author on the Summary for the Policy Makers Report for both the Third and Fourth Assessment Reports.
Dr. Josh Lipton, CEO of Stratus Consulting, said “I congratulate Joel on this honor. We were all thrilled to see that Joel’s involvement as one of the authors of and key contributors to the IPCC reports has earned him front-page accolades. Joel has truly been a world-wide leader on issues related to climate change for two decades. His contributions have been central to several rounds of IPCC reports, and have made a real impact on the world’s recognition and understanding of this critical issue.”
